After neglecting this blog for an astonishing four months, I have reemerged from my hole to apologize to all four of you that actually read this drivel for not keeping current. Life is good and I’ve actually got a lot of junk to post here. But between being absurdly busy and spotty internet access, I’ve been prevented from keeping you all as up-to-date as I’d like. So while I continue to work on a couple real updates, here are some photos I’ve snapped over the last year but haven’t gotten around to posting.
WARNING!!!!! A couple are photos of animal slaughter I took at a holiday festival. If you’re squeemish, you probably don’t want to scroll down. You’ve been warned.
Enjoy!
- 900-year-old bible written on horsehide near the town of Ziway
- Lake Abajia
- Traditional handicrafts my compoundmate Amina made
- For those who don’t know, Ethiopia is where coffee originated and the coffee culture is all pervasive to this day. Here is a pan of beans roasting in my house
- A pan of half-roasted coffee
- Fully roasted coffee
- More cows getting slaughtered. We know how to party in Ethiopia!
- Who’s hungry? We’re having burgers for dinner!
- Holiday cattle slaughter
- This little guy was another future dinner. And he was delicious. I’m the worst recovering vegetarian in history.
- My friend, Father Paddy, head of the Catholic Mission in Arba Minch talks to some children at a school he helped establish some Americans (seated) also assisted in painting the building and getting books for the kids
- An American friend attends a ceremony in the elementary school she helped improve and paint
- Bamboo grove
- A couple friends at a Tej Bet–Ethiopia’s answer to a wine bar
- Tej is Ethiopian honey wine and it’s goddamn delicious.
- Window
- Some PCVs and Ethiopians enjoy a big feast! I think it might have been one of the cows pictured above a few hours after I took the photo.
- This is what my feet look like all the time in Ethiopia during rainy season.

OMC! I love your blog. LOOOONG overdue at that! But most of all, I love your pictures. You are such a great photographer and have a natural eye for it. I LOVE bamboo forest and window. Not that cows bleeding downhill aren’t totally rad. Can I have window to frame? I love it!! I love the handicrafts pic, too. I love you, too. NOT as much as the window picture tho. Oh crap! NOT a good thing to say from the owner to the rights of “window” when you want it for yourself. My bad. Sorry Spence…I love you MORE than that picture. I really do!

The pictures looking amazing Spencer. It’s great to hear you’re doing well, and sounds like your having the time of your life. You need to be in more of the pictures, and not just your feet.
Peace man!

I actually started following your blog awhile ago but I never had the guts to comment since I felt so overwhelmed by your courage to travel way outside your comfort zone. But I’m glad that you’re safe and sound. How long are you going to be in Ethiopia for? Another year? If so, good luck to you and be safe! You’re doing an awesome job at HTFU.
